6 Basic Rules in Web Design

  1. Some Internet servers are case sensitive so you should never use any capitalisation. Do not use any UPPERCASE letters in your file names. Only use letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores, other characters may not work over the Internet. Also avoid spaces if possible. These three rules apply to both web pages and any images or other files that these pages may contain.

                                 Eg: qwerty_qwerty--------123456.htm

  1. A home page is the first page your customer will see when they type in your web address in Internet Explorer. This page must always be called "index.html" or "index.htm" (lowercase) or web servers will not find your home page.
  1. People on the Internet can only view a font if they have it installed on their computer. If you use a fancy font and your customer does not have it on their computer, the font will change to the boring default font. For this reason you should stick to the fonts that most computers have installed. These include:

Arial -  Times New Roman - Courier New - Georgia - Verdana

Most web pages are usually a Helvetica, Arial style font, as it gives a professional look. Fancy fonts can be inserted as a graphic.

  1. Pictures taken on digital cameras and graphics drawn at high resolutions need to be resized. Ideally pictures should be approximately 6 x 4 inches or smaller in size and at a resolution of 75 DPI. Also, try not to put too many images on one page. Most basic graphic / photo software is capable of resizing images. If you do not have access to such software then feel free to contact AA Imagination on 02 4936 6061.

Freeware Graphical software can also be downloaded from the Internet. It is important to keep your file sizes as small as possible as large files create a lot of Internet traffic. People are naturally impatient and if your page takes too long to load up, they will not look at your page. Try to keep photos under 50 kilobytes and small graphics under 10 kilobytes. "jpg" and "gif" formats are ideal for the Internet.

  2. All files (graphic and web pages) must be located within your sites parent directory and this complete directory structure must be uploaded to the Internet in the exact structure. For learners, it is best just to save all your files in the one directory (folder).
  1. External Links (A hyper link that links to a page out side your site) should always contain the http:// in front of www.domainname.com.

    Ie: Click Here (link = "http://www. domainname.com)
